How To Get Along With Others

“A lot of us have friction with family and friends. Many get into unwanted and unnecessary, even terrible, arguments. Would you like to know how to get along better? Nothing will change unless you do something different from what you’re currently doing. Get it?

You may or may not like the answer BUT it works! It actually works great but there is a caveat. It doesn’t work if you don’t implement it. If you want your life to change you must change some of the things you are thinking and doing in your life! You must put this to use!

Getting along begins with you! You must go first. You make the effort. Never expect the other to go first. They follow your lead if they are willing. This way you put an end to your unrealistic expectations and you are in control of yourself.

Respect People’s Feelings It Could Mean Everything To Them

You can only be in charge of you. The mistake people make is thinking they can control others. If they don’t think it, somehow they still attempt it. Let go of control. Let go of manipulation. Be the kind of person people naturally want to get a long with.

Just the other day I was at a gathering. There were a couple of people there who were in support groups. An older gentleman and a younger woman. Both were absolutely delightful. At one point the young woman shared an exciting new group she discovered

She very gladly told this gentleman during the discussion. He immediately dismissed her comment by stating, ‘I don’t like that group. It does nothing for me.’ I remained silent as I was not party to the conversation and merely overheard a portion of it.

Control Your Emotions And Your Mouth And Respect Others

However, I could see the young woman take the ‘hit’ immediately. I felt for her. She is enthused. She is eager to share. She made an exciting new discovery for herself and this gentleman squashed it no sooner than she spoke it. I get that he did not intend to. Still, he did.

He was not aware of what he did nor how it affected her. He was just being himself. My point? Be sensitive. Be aware. You win more bears with honey than with vinegar. He could’ve simply said, ‘marvelous you found a group you enjoy.’ He didn’t have to express his opinion.

But that is what WE do. We express opinions. We even do it when others aren’t interested or when they are looking for some support. There is nothing wrong in having an opinion as long as one realizes, that is all it is. An opinion is not gospel. It is not a fact. It’s opinion!

Listen With Your Heart And Your Ears – Accept And Respect 

People argue opinions as facts on social media all the time. They unfriend people who they get upset and disagree with. That’s their choice. My point? Don’t go there. Stop creating friction. Learn tolerance. Learn patience. Learn how to support others. Be kind.

We cannot change their minds. Hence, the truism, ‘you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make the horse drink’. Yes, you can influence others and they may change their OWN mind, but you can’t change it for them. Instead of attempting control, be nice.

BE caring. Be supportive. Be kind. Be the kind of listener you hope to get at times. Stop inflicting your opinions and you will get further, faster, with some people. An author friend, opened his book with a very powerful statement. I read it in my teens or early twenties.

Speak Only To Bless Heal Prosper Inspire Motivate And Transform

‘You can please 50% of the people 50% of the time. The other 50% you will never please. So, you might as well learn to please yourself.’ I include it to say, know the odds of your influence. The percentages may not be correct, that isn’t the point. Stop trying to control others.

Be the change you want to see in others and the world. Be accepting. No, I am not saying accept hatred and violence. You know better than that. I am saying, in the course of normal conversation with family, friends and even strangers, have integrity and be respectful.

Be thankful and appreciative. Say ‘how wonderful’ and ‘how marvelous’ instead of raining on their parade. Attempt to not correct them but allow others to find their own way. Some people want to be happy sharing good news without being one upped or dissed. Get it? If you are grateful for your family and friends, and the opportunity to share, approach them differently. Be kind and giving. Be receptive. Celebrate everything!” Rex Sikes

Thinking It Is A Problem Is The Problem!

“When you say, ‘this is a problem’, guess what? It is! When you say, ‘I have a problem’, you do! You ARE affirming the problem.  Get it? It is really only a situation, an event, another person, but you are looking at it and declaring it AS a problem. It is whatever you declare it to be.

In reality, it is neither good nor bad. You know the saying, ‘one man’s meat is another’s poison’. ‘One person’s ceiling is another person’s floor.’ It is just a set of conditions, or circumstances, that you choose to view in a particular way. You react to it as you learned to react.

It is nothing until you declare it as something. Your judgment, your naming it, is A problem that makes it THE problem. Perception is everything. What you say IS WHAT YOU GET! Stop labeling events as troublesome or problems! Just stop doing it! STOP! Get it?

What You Say Is What You Get – Thinking Makes It So

Outer circumstances are just elements in play. It is inside you, that you determine how you react, respond, review and feel about them. You translate if from situation to problem. You could translate it into an opportunity, but most likely won’t. You’ll do what you always do.

Until, you learn a better way, you will continue to make things problems! Until you stop! Thinking it is a problem IS the problem! Once you stop labeling the situations, and the thoughts and feelings associated with it, you are free to make better choices!

There are a number of things you can do to transform yourself, and your situations. BUT the very first step is to become aware of what you’re already doing. If you aren’t aware of how your thoughts and behaviors limit you, you won’t change them. You must notice!

You Are Where Your Thoughts Take You – Speak To Only To Bless 

First, become aware of what is going on. Then STOP what you are doing. Learn to do something else; anything else! Learn to change yourself, and what you normally do, in the moment by doing something different than  what you automatically do. Get it?

If you keep doing the same thing again and again, you keep perpetuating those issues. Only you can stop it. That is good news. Only you can stop it when you first become aware of your habits. So, become aware. Get grateful.

Be happy when you recognize yourself engaging in  the behaviors you want to change. That IS THE FIRST STEP. Noticing. Recognizing. From there you can begin the process of changing. You can’t if you are blind to what needs to change. So be glad. Really glad.  THEN celebrate everything!” Rex Sikes

Every Now And Then I Tell The F’ing Mirror Off!

“Recently I wrote: Do you realize every thought you think, every experience you have, each and every relationship, every ‘thing’ and everything in your life is a reflection of what goes on inside you? It is all a mirror to what is within you.” If you read it you know this.

Every now and then I have told the mirror off. I have let loose on another person, screamed at circumstances, or wailed on myself. I have, it is true. I have blamed the mirror, accused the mirror, resented the mirror, hated the mirror, you name it, I probably did it.

My point? We are human. We have feelings. Sometimes, these get ‘the better of us’ as the saying goes. We succumb, we let loose, we unleash. You know what? It is okay. It is human. Don’t get down on yourself for it. Why beat yourself up for beating yourself up?

Awareness Doesn’t Stop You From Making Mistakes …

If you harmed another with your words, you can ask for forgiveness or make amends. If that person is no longer living you can resolve it within yourself. My point? Take it easy on yourself for being human. We all mess up. We all stumbled and fell while learning to walk.

Okay, you got angry. You said things you meant or didn’t mean. Now you feel ashamed, embarrassed, hurt, angry or whatever. Notice it. Realize you may not want to feel this way again. Notice it. Forgive yourself. Accept that you are a human. Let the rest go. Move on.

Move on once you have actually let it go. When you release it you can be free of it. If you stuff it down and suppress it you will face it again sometime. What we resist, persists. So take a deep breath and drop it. Shrug your shoulders and release it. Feel free of it. Let go.

… Awareness Allows You To Learn From Mistakes 

Allow yourself the ability to ‘f’ things up. As long as we live we will make mistakes. Just attempt not to keep making the same ones. Make new mistakes instead. It is okay to be human because that is what you are. Most of us try to be perfect. We aren’t. Or, perhaps…

We are perfectly imperfect. We are beautiful with all of our flaws. Each ‘f’ed up time is a blessing and opportunity to let go. Challenges are blessings. The mirrors are blessings. Our mistakes are blessings. Everything is a blessing. When we can see that we are truly free. So, be glad. Be grateful. Learn to celebrate everything!” Rex Sikes

When You Look Outside Yourself What Do You See?

“When you look at others what do you see? What do circumstances reveal to you?  What do you notice? How do you feel? What do you pay attention to? How do you react? Have you ever thought about what is going on outside of you and why it might be going that way?

Do you realize every thought you think, every experience you have, each and every relationship, every ‘thing’ and everything in your life is a reflection of what goes on inside you? It is all a mirror to what is within you. ‘As within, so without’, ‘As above, so below’. It is all you.

It is all me. It is each of us. Our thinking, feeling, speaking and behaving reveals who we are within. We reflect and radiate who we are to the world and those around us. Instead of thinking it is others, or  circumstances responsible for our lot, look inside. Discover!

Life Is A Reflection Of What We Allow Ourselves To See

You can’t learn other people’s life lessons. They must do that work for themselves. They will only do it when they are ready. This applies to you too. When ready, you will learn the lessons and make the changes YOU are supposed to. Look within. See. Become aware.

Look at the lessons the mirror provides. Don’t blame the mirror. Become aware of what is reflected and what you may wish to change. The more willing you are to look and to learn every day, at each opportunity, the more quickly you will transform. Get it?

Stop judging others and circumstances. Look for the lesson provided you. Look at how you can change in response to others and circumstances. It can burn. It can be difficult. The truth can hurt but when you do seek to be better, you can become better. It’s up to you.

Life Reflects Your Choices – What Are You Choosing Each Moment

You won’t see better wearing blinders. You need to see your blind spots. You need to see what you have missed. You need to recognize those things you blame others for. Your need to notice how you react. You need to see these things, so you can get free. Let go!

Look at those things that hold you back and drop them. Release and let go of the weight of your problems. Release the blames and excuses, the judgements and resentments. Release and be free. Stop blaming the mirror. Be pleased you have mirrors around. Be glad the mirrors are here to help you. Evolve yourself and transform. Be grateful for all of it. Celebrate everything!” Rex Sikes

What Are All These ‘Aholes’ Good For?

“Sometimes people rub you the wrong way. They may get in your face, disagree with you on Facebook, cut you off on the road, give you the finger, are just plain rude or don’t say thanks. They may be thoughtless and careless and obnoxious. Sometime people suck!

Right? Not only people but sometimes circumstances are just plain horrible. The bank forecloses. Your business sours. Your car breaks down. The school expels you or your kid. Politicians lie, cheat, steal and vote their pay raises, not yours. Plenty of stuff to gripe about.

Right? Yup, what to do? You can succumb to all that is wrong and feel nasty, angry, horrible or depressed. That is an option. You can do nothing but sit in the mire, in a pity party, wallowing. You could rise above it and choose to take the higher road. It is your choice.

Less Than Glorious Events Are There For Your Transformation

When people, and life, get you down, if you feel anger, the injustice, sad, resentful or offended, that is what YOU need to work on. Those feelings are signals you have some inner buttons, inner issues, being pushed. If you do nothing they will get pushed again and again!

What to do?  Let it go. The universe, and others, provide opportunity to discover what we harbor within ourselves so that we can let go of it and be free. If we always do what we always did we will always get what we always got. Consider these feelings as dashboard alerts.

They are signals to you. You have an opportunity to change. If you take the opportunity you transform. If you don’t, you don’t.  Imagine, you do something nice for a person, and they don’t say, ‘thanks’. Ouch! Notice how you feel? Observe your feelings. Become aware.

People Who Push Your Buttons Are Gifts To Help You Transform

Instead of blaming others and events, let go of resentment. Drop the hurt. Release it all. The more we drop old behaviors, limiting beliefs, hurtful experiences, hostile, angry feelings, resentment, regret, shame, guilt, envy and other pain, the freer we become. Let go!

Circumstances and people provide opportunities for these ‘feelings’ to be triggered, surface, and recognized IF you are aware. They surface so you can release them. Let go of the negative.  Shift into the positive. All you have to do is let go and change begins.

Unfortunately, many people, instead of releasing these less than glorious thoughts and feelings wallow in them. Release and let go of them. Observe them and release. Take a deep breath. Let them go.  Shift into more glorious thoughts and feelings. Focus on the positive.

Everything Is A Blessing – Consider It A Blessing And Celebrate All

Let go of the negative.  Shift to positive.  You let go and the change begins. It begins with your decision to let go. Forgive yourself and the person who grieved you. Imagine sending them love and blessings. Give thanks they are part of your transformation!

Transform! You can change in an instant. Choose to release the negative feelings and hurt.  Drop them and move on. Don’t judge. Stop judging. Let it go. Love, accept, allow and forgive others, as well as, yourself.  Spread goodwill. Bless your teachers. They are those people, and circumstances, that trigger discomfort in you. Without them, you wouldn’t know what to release. Celebrate everything!” Rex Sikes

It May Not Be Easy But It Is Almost Always Simple.

“It may not be easy but it is almost always simple. One reason why it seems difficult is people overthink and complicate things. They needn’t, but they do. This has been part of the conditioning process while growing up. It is also something we can overcome and change.

Most things are innately simple. We don’t believe it can be as easy as it is, so we get in our own way. We think it must be tougher, ‘I will never be able to do this’. We ask questions like, ‘why must it be so hard’? ‘How come shit always happens to me?’ We complain.

We think others have it easier. Hell, we KNOW they do, or so we think. Get it? What we often accept as true, our assumptions based on limited observations, are generally inaccurate and only part of the picture. We operate mostly on limited info. We don’t see it all.

If You Think You Can Or You Think You Can’t You Are Right

We operate off of maps and those, by virtue of being a map, a representation of the territory, are incomplete. A partial representation at best. Our own neurology filters what is available to us so we don’t even know what we don’t know. Get that?

We aren’t aware that we aren’t aware. We operate as if the info in our head is truthful and accurate. None of it is. Some of it is supportive and some of it non-supportive based on what you want to accomplish. It is what it is. Filtered info about reality.

We mistake it as reality. We think it is, as we think it is. It isn’t but we will fight tooth and nail to prove it is what we think it is. So when someone says, ‘I can’t do this’, while it isn’t true at all, it is true for the person who thinks it is. It is gospel. They are sure of it.

You Go Where Your Thoughts Take You – Choose Thoughts Wisely

Until, they decide differently. Once they decide, it could be possible, they begin to open up new avenues of thought, feeling, behaving and being. Once a possibility exists there is new hope. What most do is rush to the new hope in the old way with old beliefs and limitations.

If you always do what you always did you will continue to always get what you always got. Then, they try the new thing, determine it is hard, and they can’t do it. Get it? It is a cycle that needs to be broken. You really do need to think new thoughts and live from new ones!

If you live from old conditioning you will always continue to get the same results you were getting before. If you want different, better, more positive and productive results you need to think, feel and behave in new ways. This is the first possibility to become aware of.

Skill Comes Of Doing – Repetition Is The Mother Of Success

Pitfalls and plateaus are part of the climb. It doesn’t mean something is impossible because it is difficult or because you have never done it before. Get out of your own way. Realize there will be challenges. Learn to embrace them. Enjoy the challenges. Accept them.

Keep moving toward the goal. Step by step you get there. JUST stay out of your own way. YOU can learn to do that, too. Learn to think differently and you will learn to feel differently. You will transform from someone who can’t to someone who can! You will transform!

You will become someone who finds Opportunity where none seemed to exist. You will learn to recognize when you are BS’ing yourself and stop it. You will discover change is simple and can be easier than you ever thought before. You’ll get better results.

Awareness Is The Key To Change – What You Focus On Expands

You’ll find that you can more easily overcome the tough times. You’ll understand the purpose of the less than glorious, or uncomfortable feelings and difficult obstacles, and use these to break loose from the old limitations that bound you. You will learn to think positively and powerfully to overcome fear, worry, doubt and procrastination.

You will take charge. You will discover you can build a champion mindset and skyrocket the positive results you want to get. You can be, do, and have anything you decide to make happen, because you go from victim to victor and you persist in your pursuits, no matter what. You find reasons to feel blessed and be grateful. You will and do celebrate everything!” Rex Sikes

The Universe Constantly Holds A Mirror Up To You: Use It!

“We are mirrors for each other. Each person you meet or encounter reflects back who and what you are. That person is your reflection. You can learn from this person if you are wise and ready. It is what is meant by, ‘when student is ready the teacher appears.’ Understand?

When you are ready to recognize that you meet your self, source, god or the universe in each person you will become free. The awareness necessary to develop is that when you feel your buttons pushed it is NOT the other person, it is you reacting to you.

You react to the reflection. Your patterns and buttons and resistance are mirrored back to you so you CAN when you are aware and ready to choose to, let go and release them, so you can be free and move forward. Conflict is this regard is absolutely a blessing.

What We Find In Others Originates In Ourselves – Become Aware

We get feedback about ourselves from others, from events and circumstances. These let us know who we are, what we are focused on. We get feedback in the same way from our feelings. Everything is an opportunity when we realize it and recognize it in the moment.

What we see, like or hate, in another is what we are being reflected back to us. Every person, every moment, every circumstance is your teacher. Stop blaming, excusing, whining and complaining and  you can learn something wonderful about yourself. You can transform.

If you focus on what to transform instead of blaming the mirror or making excuses an entire new positive world opens up to you. When you stop judging outside yourself, and when you stop judging yourself, you become free. Stop blaming the mirror for what you see!

End Blaming – Excusing – Complaining – Judging – Become Free

Simply, realize in the moment, that the heat you feel, the anger, the resistance, the push back, the sadness, the fear, whatever it is in the moment, is a loud alert signal, to stop, and let go. Stop pushing back. Release. This isn’t about the other person so don’t think it is.

It isn’t about whether they are right or wrong, it is about turning the flashlight on yourself so you can see what has been keeping you bound. You need to recognize what is holding you captive and drop it. You can end suffering instantly, when you release all of it.

Be thankful for all people. Be thankful for all circumstances. Be thankful for all challenges. It is through these you grow. You recognize what the issues are for you and can put an end to them through awareness and acceptance. When you become grateful for all you transcend all of it. So celebrate everything!” Rex Sikes
