4 Reasons Why We Fail And What We Can Do To Succeed Part 1

be faithful in small things

“‘Have you ever wondered why you don’t get things right away?’ OR Why some people give up on their goals? Have you thought, ‘Will I ever make it?’ You may have.  Most of all of us have wondered.

There are reasons why people give up on their goals or fail to get them. There are reasons why others succeed in making their dreams come true. Success of failure is up to each of us. Here are some of the reasons for failure and what to do to succeed.

We need to understand and accept that some things are just the way they are. Then stop complaining about it. It is the way things are. It is nature. How frequently do you complain about gravity being an issue. I bet almost never. We just accept it. Learn to accept what IS.

Understand this: Some things just take time. There is a season to harvest. Not everything is immediate. Some people just aren’t patient. They don’t get this concept; keep on going until you get there.  Stay with it. Be patient.  Relax on this it takes time.

You miss opportunity when you hurry. When you are rushed and stressed you don’t see or think clearly. You miss out and lose out. When you THINK you have to have it is a constraint. You are putting pressure on yourself for a deadline. You have to realize you can’t push a rope. Happiness and success don’t conform to the clock.

Most people  fail because they don’t manage their thoughts. They aren’t in control of their images and self talk so they talk themselves out of it. Success and happiness is 99% mental and 1% what we do. The inner world determines the results we get in the outer world and not the other way around.

We need to manage and control our minds so we are able to do the 1% efficiently and effectively otherwise we spin our wheels. We can struggle and work hard and not get very far if our thinking isn’t right to begin with. When it comes to our efforts it is not what we do but how we do it that is most important.

Hardship helps us! It is a part of life. Some people gripe and  think life should be easier. They give up when the going gets rough. There is a price to pay for everything. You have to endure and be strong. This is why mindset is so important. Weak thinking leads to poor results.

YOU are in the PROCESS of changing.  You aren’t at the end yet. You are somewhere along the way. You are in the Conscious Competence stage much of the time. This is the phase of mastery where you talk yourself through it and attempt to consciously manage all the components.

You aren’t done yet. You are on the way to making your new skills a habit but you aren’t there yet. So relax in the process don’t fight it. Understand it and work with it. You move through it faster when you assist it instead of resist it. Be patient. Pursue your dreams with a relaxed positive mindset. Remind yourself, you are IN the process!

Just as when you cook a beautiful meal you prepare it, season it, and cook it. It takes whatever time it takes. If you remove it from the oven early it won’t be the meal you anticipate. Give it the time it needs.

As you develop the habits of success you gain in momentum. Everything becomes easier and you handle difficulties better. It takes time and correct repetition over a period of time for a habit to be born. You are creating new neural pathways and behaviors.

New thoughts lead to new behaviors. This is actually an exciting time if you let it be. It can be a time of delight and wonderful enjoyment. You will learn and have many ‘ahas’ and insights that can thrill you and inspire you. You can be motivated and excited to incorporate your learnings.

When you recognize where you are in the process it becomes so much easier. It won’t magically make everything fantastic but when you understand a bit about what you are going through and what you may expect to encounter it takes the edge off. Once the edge is off you are free to feel as incredible as you will chose to. It is up to you!

This recognition and understanding allows you to remember to put your attention in areas that matter instead of going astray. You need to stay focused and not get distracted by circumstances, doubts, fear or worry. More about all this in the next blog post.  As a reminder I have discussed each of these issues in previous blog pages. Go back and review. It will help a great deal.

Know this! YOU can be the success you want. You can have happiness, love, wealth, health anything your heart desires when you take 100% responsibility for learning how to make these happen and then applying what you learned.

Knowledge is useless unless you use it.  Use what you are learning and make yourself and your life what you want them to be. Transform your mind and heart and you transform your life. You deserve to enjoy each and every moment. So go ahead and delight yourself! ” Rex Sikes

Your Brain Is Like A Muscle. Use It Or Lose It!

brain is like a muscle - carl sagan

“You can tip the odds in your favor and keep your brain healthy. There are simple things you can do. Eat right, avoid chemicals, pesticides and processed foods. Get enough sleep. Get fresh air and sunshine.

Exercise and move your body more than you sit or rest. We were designed to move not to sit in artificial light all day and night. Move more during your day. Take breaks, get up and walk.

Add novelty! Break up your patterns and routines. Try new things. Take different routes to school or work. Do things differently, use your other hand. Play games, work out math problems, put puzzles together.

Cross crawl, do your finger exercises as previously described. Write with paper and pen more. Writing by hand is marvelous for the brain! Keep active!

Improve your concentration. Gaze at a candle or dim light and keep your attention on the light. Whenever you become aware your attention wandered return to concentrating on the light. Do this in increasing time increments.

Start with five or ten  minutes and work your way up to thirty. Pretty soon you will be able to concentrate on what you want to concentrate on with fewer self distractions.

Focus on your breathing. Place your attention either at your nostrils or at your belly. Pay attention to the incoming and outgoing breaths. Relax and keep your attention on your breathing. As with the previous exercise whenever you notice you have wandered or drifted off bring your attention back. These exercises are for training and refining your concentration and awareness.

There is great reward in recognizing when we go astray and gently bringing our attention back to where we first placed it. We  ‘break the wild horse’ and tame it. We learn that we have the ability to determine what we think about rather than living as a victim of our thoughts or feelings. We become the person in charge!

You grow in any ability faster when you encourage and validate rather than criticize what you don’t do right. So whenever you notice your mind wandered or you aren’t doing what you intend to be doing stop, notice it and keep your self talk positive. “Hey, you noticed you were off, good for you!’ and pat yourself on the back. You will make changes much more swiftly when you are positive.

You can look over and reflect on your present life experiences and find all there is to be grateful about. Discover all that you feel truly thankful for. Make a list and enlarge it daily. Celebrate and feel the gratitude fully.

Immerse yourself in the positive wonderful feelings of appreciation. Feel joy! Feel incredible! The feelings are the most important part of this practice so feel them all FULLY!

Reflect on life experiences from the past or present and extract the positive lessons and opportunities. Look these over to find lessons you may have missed. Notice how and where the potential benefit was or is.

Learn from those times instead of feeling less than glorious. Re-code them in light of life lesson’s you can now use. You can re-frame anything!

Memorize something each day. Numbers, names, faces and places. Act, get in a play and memorize your lines. Memorize songs. Keep working your memory. Take dancing lessons. Read more and watch TV less.

Use your imagination to generate images instead of having them provided to you. Utilize all your five senses in imagination. Visualize lots! Consider all the good things you can think of.

Meditate. There are different definitions of mediation. Some approaches use concentration as when you repeat a mantra. Some methods are about aligning with frequencies and vibrations by generating or listening to sounds. Some stimulate the imagination as when you stare at a mandala. Try many different ways and enjoy each.

Some are physical as when you dance with such abandon you stop thinking. Some involve just being the activity you are doing. For example, just wash the dish and do nothing more in mind or body. Sit and gaze at the wall and do no more or no less. There is a wide variety of beneficial meditation approaches you can discover.

Another way is to be the watcher, the witness, the impartial observer. Sit or lie back relaxed and watch your thoughts. Whatever they are just notice. Don’t judge. Look as they come and go. Positive or not. Avoid getting hooked. As leaves float down a stream or river so do our thoughts. Let them float by on the screen of your mind.

Merely watch them flow by. Don’t engage with them. If you get caught up in judging or entertaining any thought when you notice what you are doing simply return to witnessing without criticizing yourself for having gone astray.

Everything is okay. Free yourself from the need to criticize or comment on how you are doing. Let it go and just do the process. Validate instead of negate!

We have the ability to manage our thoughts. We can chose what we want to think about.  This is positive thinking. Keep focused on positive thoughts and affirmations. Keep your self talk and mental images positive.

Whenever you notice yourself thinking less than positive thoughts stop and return to thinking positive. Train your brain to do what you want it to do. Your brain should be your servant! Validate yourself as you succeed in these exercises.

When you notice new things own your observations and awarenesses. Validate yourself for your positive insights and awareness. Learn from these. Keep at it, keep playing with new ways of being and doing.

The mind is like a muscle it grows with exercise. Our muscles grow from repeated regular exercise and so does our brain. AND so does your ability to change easily and do new things.

Many of our abilities fall into the ‘use it or lose it’ categories. So keep at it. Don’t let yourself get rusty. Keep healthy and facile in mind and body by daily devoting time to healthy practices.

The return on your investment of time is well worth it. If you want to enjoy greater health and over all well being then do the things that bring it about. Stay young and energetic!” Rex Sikes

Without This You May Be Missing Out On A Lot!

don't sit around waiting forwaever

“You could be missing out on lots of what life has to offer. You might not recognize opportunity even when it stares you in the face. You could be closed off to many good things that would help you get ahead in your career or at school. Sadly, if you are missing out you are missing out. Who knows what or how much you might be missing. Have you ever considered this?

Curiosity is one thing we all seem to have when we are young but tend to let diminish as we grow older. We shut down instead of staying open. We get jaded instead of filled with wonder. We live by ‘been there done that’ instead of ‘WOW how incredible! How does this work? or Why? or What does that do, or mean? We stop asking questions from an open mind.

Instead of seeing to understand and to learn many of us sacrifice those important qualities for certainty or for being right. Some of us get into arguments that go no where just to prove our point. We seem to have forgotten what it was, and is, like to experience the innocence and openness and wonder of a child. To be open and to wonder is amazing and has so many marvelous benefits.

Some one pointed out that we listen in order to speak next not really to understand the other person’s position. We watch ‘our’ shows and listen to radio that supports what we already believe. We seem to all sing in the same choir but there are many choirs in the world and we may not accept the others. We go to war over philosophy and religion and words. We ostracize and criticize.

We would benefit greatly if we sought to become curious again. We’d be much better off if we were to learn, to explore, to look and actually listen seeking to understand rather than to dismiss too early. Our brains crave novelty and newness . By providing ourselves with new things to learn and enjoy that stimulation alone helps keep us younger.

attitude difference between ordeal and adventure

Thinking and behaving differently is stimulating in healthy ways. We grow older faster by only giving our brains the same stimuli all the time. When we restrict our attention and our choices we limit ourselves and we don’t grow as much. Stress also stunts our development. We need to provide our brains with new things to enjoy. We need to stretch ourselves. There are lots of things we can do to add variety, novelty and newness to our lives. There is so much to become curious and wonder about. We are such creatures of habit we miss so much of what good is going on around us and elsewhere. Dive in!

Take a new route to work or school, dress and shower in a different order, sleep facing another way, learn new games, play, take up new hobbies, sports, read materials and watch shows you wouldn’t normally and stay open. Instead of objecting to what you disagree with ask questions that help you understand the other position. Look for the merits not the pitfalls.  Meet new people, learn another language. Visit museums and art galleries. Try new foods, take up cooking. Vary the speed of your walk, sing, skip, go new places. Listen to different kinds of music. There are so many ways to add newness to our experience.

The world and people and nature is an endless supply of areas to be curious about. Stop and take a moment to ‘smell the rose’, to notice, to look, to observe, to listen, to interact with the little things we pass by or miss or shut out each day. Take moments to savor. Be an explorer. We can imagine we are in the jungle or the Amazon and everything is new and different. We can ask questions to understand without explaining or defending our point of view. We can try new things!

There is so much to notice, enjoy, delight in and appreciate. Why miss any of it? We need to get out of our comfort zone and our laziness and discover more. I have always maintained that ‘exploration IS the doorway to adventure’. Live as an adventurer, not a conquerer. Live as a young child open to find newness each second. We only go around once why not live more fully?” Rex Sikes

What adventures can you discover that will delight you? Enjoy!

Outrageous! You Learned To Do This!?!

we are what we repeatedly do

“Everything is a process. Life is a process. We are born, we grow and age. It takes time to develop and be able to do many skills from our earliest ones such as rolling over; sitting up; balance; motion and crawling; feeding oneself; and on to other skills  like reading, and writing.

During our childhood development we played, we pretended, we had imaginary friends, we learned games and rules for things like hide and seek, hop scotch, board games, video games and sports. We learned to take exams in school, ride a bike, take a bus, drive a car.

There are so many things we learned and most of our life has been spent learning in one way or another. The other parts of our life are spent using what we have learned. Both parts occur simultaneously. It is all a process.

Each and everything we learned and acquired as behaviors and skills took the time it took to be able to do it and perhaps, eventually, master. We can’t really rush any of it. Whatever time it took to get as good as we have got is the time it took. We can’t hurry it up any more than we can hurry up getting from 12 to 16 or 16 wanting to be 18. The time it takes IS the time it takes. There is a season for everything.

repetition of thought Napoleon Hill

While there are methods for accelerating some of the things we are capable of learning all of it is a process that improves, like wine, with age. In our case it is not only a matter of time but of repetition, correct repetition, because we can practice poorly or we can practice the wrong things. Regardless, we either end up with reliable great skills or reliable poor skills or with the ability to do wrong things. We are learning machines!

We learn through correct repetition and  by making mistakes and correcting these. We learn through self-feedback and by guidance from others. We learn by aiming forward and doing whatever it takes to learn, acquire and accomplish. Mostly, we learn  by doing. As we learn through time, repeating correctly, correcting mistakes we gain experience and hopefully wisdom. Ahhh, to be truly wise! Wouldn’t that be marvelous AND helpful!

We have learned so many incredible things during our lives.

We have also learned some pretty useless things and some bad habits and patterns. We learned whatever we learned along the way. Much of our learning occurs without any conscious thought and some of it does require it. We learned so much before we could even speak, read or write. We learned to communicate and understand our native language without any book or reference material. We are amazing learners!

success is the sum of small efforts repeated day in and day out

We learned to sit in class and pay attention, we learned to be good citizens and follow rules, we learned to do things and even eat things we didn’t like at first. We learned to break rules and color outside the lines. We learned to smoke or put things in our body that at first offended our senses. Truly, we can learn anything!

We learned we should speak our minds, stand up and be counted and we learned that we should be polite, never say anything rude, be quiet and don’t stand out. We learned that mavericks are unwanted and we learn that to get ahead you must be a maverick. We learned that we must get an education to succeed and we learned that many of the truly innovative, wealthy successful people in the world were drop-outs.

We learned contradictory things. We learned rules and beliefs about ourselves, others, and the world. We learned to think along certain lines that govern what we say and do and what we don’t say and don’t do.

its a slow process but quitting wont speed it up

We learned to believe we are incredible learners who can do anything or we learned that we were okay learners, poor learners or broken learners. We learned we should say ‘no to drugs’ but accept the drugs ‘they’ want to give us because ‘they’ know best.

We learned that certain brands of products make us brighter, smarter and more appealing to potential partners. We learned that human smells, and functions are nasty and need help from corporations to make our normal functions tolerable.

We learned that there is a price we must pay if we want the goods and we learned that if we act today, and today only, they will give us, not one but  two of the product for the very same price.

We learned it is important to be honest, upright and act with integrity and we learned that all the people who are supposed to represent us, the politicians, lie and some may be profiting from political pursuits. We learned we should trust ‘the powers that be’ and we learned that even the media lies. We learned advertisers will say anything. We learned be nice to all people and we learned be wary of strangers. WOW we have learned a lot!

attitude difference between ordeal and adventure

We learned we were invaluable and loved and deserving of every good thing or we learned we don’t have enough, don’t deserve it and probably will never get ahead. We have learned so many things.

We learned the world is a wonderful friendly abundant place or we learned the world is a cold, cruel heartless place. We have learned contradictory things that we have come to accept as true whether they may be or not.

We learned we can handle any challenge and move forward not letting anything stand in our way and that we are victors. Or we learned life and others can crush us, we are lucky if we can survive and that we will always have to deal painfully what happened as a survivor.  We learned to be victims.

We have learned we must ‘let it go’ and we have learned ‘we must never forget’. We learned that the past either propels us into the future or the past holds us back.

the secret of success is your daily routine - change

It has been pointed out that a belief is really just a thought you think over and over. It doesn’t have to be an accurate reflection of what is going on (frankly, it can’t ever be) or what is ‘true’ but WE think it is. We ACT as if it is. Hence, we live from our thoughts, that we think are right, which we have learned to think over and over again and accept as true whether or not they actually are! Whaaat!?!?

As Henry Ford stated, ‘Whether you believe you can or you can’t you are right.’

Yes, we project onto ourselves and others notions that we have come to accept and think because these thoughts travel well traveled neural pathways. Much of what we learn to think, do and feel we have learned from watching, listening and interacting with others. We have adopted their rules, beliefs and projections without even realizing it. Some we HAVE decided to adopt. I think this is outstanding!

We are incredible learners! As such we ought to recognize this about ourselves, pat ourselves on the back and appreciate all of what we have been able to learn and do during our lifetime. Frankly, it is amazing. Congratulations and celebrations are in order.

positive thinking is having confindence in your abilities

We have even tried to manage our learning by getting frustrated when we haven’t learned quick enough or performed well enough. That is a funny thing that we learned to do. We learned to comment and criticize as we endeavor to learn to do things we have never done before as if somehow we are an expert already.

We have learned to get in our own way and hopefully we have learned to get out of our own way too at times. We have learned to try hard and we have learned to relax, well hopefully we have.

Really, when you consider everything there ISN’T anything we think, do or feel that we haven’t in some way learned to think, do or feel. After all we are a human organism and anything we are capable of doing had to come from somewhere. Even if there is a genetic predisposition we had to think it or do it or feel it for the very first time, and then do it again at some point.

We become patterned and habitual, we have developed neural pathways so we don’t have to learn everything over and over again. We don’t have to invent the wheel again and again. This is a remarkable thing. It is incredible and an amazing advantage.

everyday u make a choice

Of course, the down side is we also wired in the useless or not so glorious skills, habits and unwanted behaviors. We got the fantastic with the less than glorious. Oh well, that is just the way it is.

Along the way we can begin to determine what we want. We can decide and choose what to add into ourselves, what we would like to learn and enjoy. We can decide what we want to change. We use our conscious mind to guide and direct this incredible unconscious bevy of acquired learnings.

We have learned everything that is good and ‘not so good’ RELIABLY because of these tried and true well traveled neural pathways. This is the reasonWHY changing some things we want to change can SEEM difficult at first. It is meant to be that way or we’d be re-inventing the wheel again and again. So changing DOES require some effort up front.

Still, WE CAN learn to change anything! We can learn to do anything if and when we apply ourselves. We can make whatever change we want to make but we have to do it and stick with it through the process. We have to take the time and do what is necessary for as long as it is necessary to make the change. When we do we will succeed. Through the process we will seemingly fail, we will make mistakes, there may be a tendency to criticize but we will prevail as long as we keep at it! We will succeed if we never quit.

You can be, do and have anything you want when you learn how! Success is only a decision away. Some learned to procrastinate others learned to jump right it. How we make decisions was learned.

Some learned to try and the give up others learned to keep on trying until they get what they want. Whatever you do IS because YOU learned to do it.

Right now you can learn to do something good, something new, something positive and something beneficial for yourself. You can learn to become inspired, motivated and passionate for positive change. You can lean to make all your dreams and desires come true!  You can YOU actually CAN! So, when will you? You will when you begin! Begin today!” Rex Sikes

You Can Successfully Learn To Do Anything You Want To Do!

ambition and action 2 steps to success

Ralph Waldo Emerson correctly points out that ‘Skill Comes Of Doing’. Onto that I piggy back William Hazlitt’s statement, ‘The More We Do The More We Can Do,’ because both statements are true. Once we begin to engage the process of thinking positively, learning to cook, or to perform asanas in yoga, paint, draw, write, exercise, ride a bike, ski, swim, or whatever it is we want to do we begin to learn it and practice it. In time we get better at it as long as we continue to do it.

So skill does come from doing AND the more we do the more we can do, the better we get at it. It is important to note that whatever is worth doing is worth doing poorly at first. None of us are experts when we first begin to do something new so we need not pressure ourselves or get frustrated. Instead, ease into it, be gentle, be accepting it won’t go perfectly well, it never does but with practice and by sticking with it you will improve. That is guaranteed!

It will get easier. You will get better.

Of course, there is the phenomenon of beginners luck. This is when we do surprisingly well at first only to drop off in performance a little later. It is truly lucky that we do well at first and somewhat due to the fact that we don’t know what to expect of ourselves.  The drop off occurs because the brain actually has to catch up and organize and systematize all the new learning you acquire.

This process is a life long process. It occurs as long as we engage in skill development. There will come times when our skills plateau for a while. When in a plateau phase it is important to relax, let go, don’t push, take a small break and come back later refreshed and ready to continue. All it means is your mind and body are coordinating your efforts.

The point is you can do anything you set your mind to. While it may be difficult you will get better at it. Henry Ford reminds us. ‘If You Think You Can Or You Think You Can’t You Are Right’. Attitude is important! It is important to believe you can do and accomplish anything you want to WHEN you learn how.

you can if you think you can

We are all already incredible learners. We have learned so many things from rolling over to crawling and sitting upright to walking. We have learned to feed ourselves, use the toilet, tie our shoes, to read and write. We learned many different subjects through the course of our education and many skills, talents and abilities as we have grown. What each of us can do is learn. As a species what we all are is learners.

Some of us are more methodical and take some time to acquire things others may be a bit more speedy. Some of us learn better through seeing and showing, others by listening and discussing, while others pick it up better when they get their hands on it, walk through it or engage their bodies too. To differing degrees we all utilize some of each of these areas in learning. We may all learn somewhat differently but we are all able to learn.

We all learn and can learn anything if we will allow ourselves to do what is required to learn it. For some it may take more or less time but eventually anyone can learn to do it. Whatever it is! We may not all be the very best at a particular area, or some areas may seem to present more difficulty than others to acquire but we still are capable to move forward and become the best we are able to when we dedicate ourselves to doing so.

If you want mastery you have to continue to do it. Keep in mind that anything can be difficult or a struggle, or it can be easy and fun, or it may be a bit of both. It will be whatever you decide to make it. Whatever you experience is primarily up to you!

Learning is easiest when it is fun, relaxed and when you really want to acquire the skill or the knowledge. It is beneficial when one is motivated to learn, has an open mind, is curious and expects good results. When challenges arise one looks at these in context and recognizes them for what they are. They are only hurdles on the track on the way to the finish line. Challenges stretch us and help us grow strong, plateaus help us assimilate what we are doing into our everyday abilities.

that i do today imporves ur tomorrows

You go where your thoughts take you. If you really want to do something you will find a way; if you don’t you will find an excuse. ‘The Brain Is As Strong As It’s Weakest Think’, said Eleanor Dean and she is as right as Henry Ford.

It is the tap tap tap of the chisel that carves away the stone. It is the drip drip drip that eventually fills the tub. In order to succeed most easily we need a good frame of mind and we need to stay the course. We only ever fail when we quit. Challenges are opportunities. The daily application of what you are doing when you are learning builds the skill and the habit. The habit comes from successful repetition.

Your ability to transform your life is easy. Bit by bit you will make an incredible difference for yourself. Gradually though application and repetition you will develop the habits that serve you and help you make the most of yourself and your life. It is easy when you know how.

There will always be challenges and opportunities to grow and excel simply know and accept that fact of life. There will be times when it seems like you are stuck or not moving forward. You have plateaued that is part of life so accept this too. There will be times when it is incredibly easy and everything just flows! There will be moments of disappointment and moments of ecstasy. Most of all there will be many more moments you will absolutely enjoy!

You will make more of your moments marvelous. The glass half full with positive energy is better than half full of negativity or of nothing. Fill up your glass, fill up your life! Life can be anything you want it to be. You can be anything you want to be! It is never too late!

You can learn to do anything and have anything. If you put it off you will succeed in waiting longer for it to transpire. If you decide to seize the day, make the decision and follow through on it now, sooner rather than later it will all be yours. The moment is always now. Dedicate yourself to yourself. Choose to think and feel the very best and make each moment matter!

You will be so grateful when you do!” Rex Sikes

If You Had A Million Dollars In Your Pocket But Didn’t Know It? The Millionaire Mindset You Need.

our thoughts are like magnets

A million dollars. I will get to that. But first:

You may notice reoccurring themes as you read these blog posts. That is intentional. The reason for this is that it is through repeated exposure concepts can begin to sink in. Advertisers know that most people do not act because of one ad or one info-mercial but that it takes numerous times before a person becomes ‘brand’ aware or picks up the phone and dials in. It is cited that callers required a minimum of 7 viewings before most people will phone in for the product. So being exposed to an ad, a concept or a principle one time is not enough for most people to understand it and act on it. Advertisers are great at using. The military uses this to great effect too – really great effect.

When you read a self help book, or these blogs, you are best served when you go back and re-read the material over and over again a number of times through the years. This is because you discover more than you did on the first reading. Students of mine go back again and again and listen to my audio programs and discover so much more than they realized when they attended the live program or first purchased the audio version. They call and write me telling how amazed they are that they didn’t hear it while there. They are excited and grateful they now did because they reviewed the material.

The reason you learn and understand more is that you pay attention differently. You have changed during the time you were first exposed to the material and the next time you visited it. You notice things you hadn’t previously and you begin to make sense of concepts that may also previously escaped you. You make new connections with the material.

I used to think that this was ‘a crock’ until I started doing it. Then I was stunned and amazed at all I had missed. I was delighted and  absolutely thrilled to begin to make sense of things in practical ways, that allowed me to apply what I was beginning to understand, that I had not been able to previously. Repeated exposure makes an incredible difference.

Another reason why I revisit the themes and slowly move on introducing new concepts is to allow the concepts to remain in the forefront and the background without adding too much information or too many new ideas all at once. It is important for some ideas to be savored not sampled. So I repeat, some times directly and sometimes indirectly, the concepts and principles and information.

habit creation

Most adults read and learn about things that they are interested in or want to do and accomplish. Many read self-help books and books on success. The point I am making about learning and repetition is true for any learning you wish to undertake. It is critical for those who want to be successful, live happy lives, make more money, have the career that they wish, the home they desire or the mate of their dreams. Whether you want to travel or stay at home, have children or enter a new line of work it is important, when you want to make positive changes in and for yourself, that you understand the process so you can more easily move ahead. When you want to make advancements knowing how makes it that much easier.

If you want to create a wonderful present and future and make your dreams come true all of this applies to you. It applies to you even if you are only interested in learning how to juggle or make a smaller change for yourself.

It is important to understand this next concept. There is a structure that good speakers utilize to deliver good, memorable speeches. This structure in speech giving is ‘tell them what you are going to tell them, tell them, and then tell them again what you told them.

‘Tell them (audience) what you are going to tell them’ pre-exposes the human brain to the concepts and alerts them to what is coming. Then, ‘tell them’ what you want them to know. Then ‘tell them what you told them’ reinforces all that you have told them and reminds them that you delivered what you said you were. It book ends the learning.

For example, (brief possible statements the speaker might say – obviously the speech is more than these brief example phrases. Each phase is more elaborate).

Phase 1: ‘I will tell you these three things, we are going to cover… A, B and C’.

Phase 2: ‘A is apples and apples do… or are…, B is barley and barley does… or is… and C is corn and corn does… or is…. Together apples, barely and corn …’

Phase 3: ‘Now you will remember this morning apples are… barley is… and corn was…. This is why ABC are important, and what you needed to know to be able to do with these in order to make… something better. Now, your future is different because of … and you will always remember apples, barely and corn. Thank you!’

OKAY that is only a very brief skeletal example of what could be said. The reason why speakers utilize this approach is that by providing information in this manner you help the listener learn it, and retain it. Is one time enough for most things? No, repetition is necessary. You provide the information and by repeating it in different ways (during the different phases) you reinforce it. Your car wouldn’t travel very far if the piston only pumped once. Reinforcement through repetition is necessary.

thoughts cycle to thoughts

You have to repeatedly exercise to get results. Once, or a few times is not enough to grow your muscles, stimulate the metabolism and have your body take the shape you want.

Neither is reading an important article or book, listening to learning audios and watching DVD’s or attending a live program.

The first time exposure is like the snowflake on the tip of the top of Mount Everest. It is the tiniest amount, the beginning of the journey. It is a very important first step, a critical step. It is a very tiny necessary one.

The moment you decide to learn to do anything is a great moment for you. It is the moment you are willing to allow yourself to be exposed to things you are not familiar with. Then hopefully you have enough interest to want to continue. After the first exposure you may or may not continue on or it may be sometime before you ever venture this way again.

Whether you do or not depends on numerous factors.

Some of these include what was the experience like, did you enjoy it or not? Was it engaging did it hook you? Did you see your need or reasons to continue? How was the instruction, good, bad, did you like the person or not? Were you there because you actually wanted to be there or needed to be there? How important is the material to you and your circumstances? Did some one make you go? There are many reasons why people do and don’t do things for themselves.

Some of the reasons may be there own or they place it others or the material. They may not like the instructor or the design of the manual. The temperature of the room wasn’t right. They may cite any number of reasons for or against.

The point is some people continue and some don’t. Educators can help expose people to new information and help them continue along but it is not only the educator’s responsibility. The responsibility is on the learner and the person who wants to make the changes. Keep in mind, “You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink’.

An educator could do everything absolutely right and there will still be those who, for whatever reason, choose not to learn from that person. That is okay and the educator shouldn’t be disappointed. Everyone and everything in it’s own time. Not everyone has the same teacher. ‘When the student is ready the teacher appears’. So different people will learn from others.

‘You cannot add anything to an already filled cup’ is a Zen principle and is very true. If someone thinks they know it all or that nothing is relevant or applies to them then you can present information all you want but they will not see it, hear it or do anything with it. Their mind is full, they have their opinions, they aren’t interested in learning. They believe they already know it. Perhaps, they want to demonstrate that they already know something. Anything is possible. Until one is ready to learn no conscious learning occurs. Learning follows genuine curiosity because curiosity opens the door to that possibility.

what you think about you bring about

I am a firm believer that no one actually teaches any one anything. One can present, one can order and structure the material and the experience so the student can best assimilate it. One can provide experiences, challenges and information so that the learner has the best possible opportunity to acquire the necessary learnings but one can not force a person to learn, use and remember if they don’t want to. Learning is what we do as individuals.

You may be taught poorly or well, but it is also true you may learn poorly or well. Learning is up to the individual and not up to the instructor. The instructor responsibility begins with being the best instructor and providing the best learning environment and experience they are able to, and sticking with the learner for as long as the learner allows them to. Learning the material is up to the learner.

When I say someone may be a poor learner I am not speaking of ‘learning disabilities’ (another topic for another time and place). We all learn. Most of us learn what we want to. A child may learn to do a complicated video games because the child enjoys it but suck at history because the child doesn’t care, the instructor is not to the child’s liking, history ‘is boring’ or because the child doesn’t understand the reason ‘why we must learn history’. Nor am I addressing conditions when people are forced to learn though it is true the learner learns the forced lessons. Nor, am I address natural environmental learning or training as in learning that certain foods I ate don’t agree with me or that fire is hot.

We are ALL natural learners barring neurological and physical impairment. We can learn anything. The humans species demonstrates time and time again, anecdotally that we can learn to do anything and to like anything. We do and enjoy some of the most bizarre things. We are natural learners but our experience in our educational facilities with mandated federal and state programs favoring global test results and percentages over actual learning and skill acquisition are less than satisfactory. That is sad. Our educational system emphasizes the wrong things memorization over ability. Socialization over personal betterment. Test results over actual results.

emerson quote we are all inventors

Well on to actual learning and acquisition.

Many people know about the following phases of behavioral acquisition: Unconscious Incompetence to Unconscious Competence. I will briefly cover these for those who don’t or as a refresher.

We begin with Unconscious Incompetence (UI) which means we do not know what we do not know. Prior to being exposed to a bicycle we didn’t know they existed nor did we know we could or couldn’t ride one. We were incompetent at the task, at knowing about it and unconscious of all of it.

Conscious Incompetence is when we realize we aren’t able to do it. We look at someone riding and we know we can’t. We hop on a bike and fall over. We haven’t learned the skills to ride it yet and we know we are not good at it. We can not successfully ride the bike.

Conscious Competence is the phase of learning where we attempt to co-ordinate all that we must to to successfully complete the task. We are aware that it is difficult and we usually talk our way through it. We perform in stilted or labored fashion as we assimilate the physical and mental abilities necessary to successfully perform the task. Another way to think about it – is the training wheels phase. We can do it but not reliably well but we are on the bike.

Unconscious Competence means we have the skill set and are able to do it without walking or talking ourselves through it. We get on a bike and ride to someones’ house without thinking about the process of riding. We no longer have to monitor it and so we don’t. We ride unconsciously while our mind attends to other things, the beauty of the day, the grocery list we need to remember etc. Riding the bike has become a reliable skill and we can do other things while riding. All of the behaviors and mindset necessary to ride have become reliable and a habit.

we are what we repeatedly do

Another example is habit formation. For those who have smoked. Many did not like the first experience of smoking. It was unpleasant and they coughed or gagged their way through it. They kept doing it, for whatever reason, it was cool, you know whatever reason there was. At some point it became a habit. It was not pleasant at first, one had to get through it, talk themselves through it, but then one day after enough repetition and time had past it became a habit. Most habits are acquired in similar fashion. You do it until it becomes a habit until it is reliable. Once reliable —

From this place we may pursue mastery of the skill set. Back to the bike example. We are now able to begin to go through the process again (somewhat modified) as we add in other skills and behaviors to enhance our abilities. We can become a stunt bike rider for example. Each new skill requires the process. While on the road to mastery it is not one steep curve. We progress toward mastery hitting plateaus where our skills seem to level out or even become less reliable for a time period.

This is an important learning time that if we embrace and accept we will go through much more swiftly. We hit plateaus because the unconscious mind takes some time to assemble and incorporate the new learnings and behaviors. While this occurs it sort of temporarily puts some of our abilities on hold. This is where we may clutch or be uncoordinated for a time being, while the unconscious puts it all together. Soon we may proceed again. It is the basis of making the learning and behaviors reliable skills. This too is a life long process. It never occurs once and is done. As long as we endeavor to be better or the best we will engage these processes.

Flow, or the concept of being in the zone is that moment when everything comes together in just the right fashion and you find yourself performing a task effortlessly. Everything is just right and you may surprise yourself with how well it worked and how well you feel about it. It occurs without thought, the unconscious takes over and voila’. Some people become junkies for these moments and it is possible to live life more in the zone or in flow when one learns how.

Obviously, there is so much more that could be discussed. The important points frankly are, learning is solely in the hands of the learner. This is why attitude is so important. The better the attitude one has when learning anything new or practicing a skill, or studying material the easier it is to progress and gain benefit. A key component is learning HOW TO get out of one’s own way and learn more easily, efficiently and swiftly.

repetition of thought Napoleon Hill

Curiosity, enthusiasm, energy, confidence that you can learn it, that you are apt and able to acquire it (not that you are already good at it) are desirable. The ability to remain open and willing. One of the disadvantages about book learning is that people are exposed mentally to concepts without getting actual experience. They see it in their mind, they are pre-exposed but they haven’t actually done it yet. Reading a book about bike riding is very different than actually riding a bike.

Still, when it comes to reading an important self-help book etc you should re-read it many times. If it is being doing a hands on seminar or learning a skill like juggling then reading a book has more value after the life experience. There is a ‘best’ time to read when it comes to learning things. Because we are people, thought, we read whenever we do. That is just how life is and we come to it when we come to it. So….

Realize that you can enhance your knowledge and abilities with supplemental reading and listening and by doing. Revisiting and correct repetition is always valuable. I say correct repetition because one can practice the wrong things, or the right things the wrong way.

If a person reads a book prior attending a seminar on how to ride a bike, chances are, as the instructor brings up points the novice bike rider book reader may have the tendency to think, ‘yep, I know that already’. Why do they think this? Because they read about it. Can they ride the bike yet? Nope, but they know ALL ABOUT bike riding.

This is a form of closure in the brain. It isn’t the curiosity and wonder of a child who is wide eyed and thinks ‘wow this is marvelous, I want to be able to do that’. The two attitudes are very different, significantly different and get different results for the people who hold them. Being open is an incredible place to be when learning and when being with a ‘teacher’. If when someone says something, you agree or disagree with it first thing, chances are you are not open. You have judged immediately based on what YOU know. It hasn’t even sunk in yet.

This is why mystics and gurus have such a tough time with devotees. Okay, I wrote that tongue in cheek, but it is also true. A learner filled with their own knowledge is difficult to overcome. This is why it is never about teaching but about learning. Yes, if you are a teacher you have a responsibility and should strive to be the best, but the same is true when you are a learner.

As I have pointed out in my blog posts here we frequently misidentify the source of our difficulties. We put responsibility outside ourselves on others, circumstances and events. We blame the poor or the rich, the government or lack of it, our spouse, significant other, children, parents, bosses, co-workers or friends, even strangers for our feelings, talents, abilities, problems. We put the cause of everything on everything outside us and never where it usually belongs which is squarely on our own shoulders. The buck always stops elsewhere. That is one of the reasons why we have difficulties.

i never lose I win or I learn

We are not broken, we are not psychologically impaired, (except in truly rare cases, although the APA, and the AMA would like us to believe we need their help MORE than we actually do require – but this is another whole discussion for another time and place). We are resourceful people with all sorts of discovered and undiscovered talents and abilities who probably for the most part have not considered ourselves as such. Learn to look inside and find your hidden treasures!

If you had a million dollars in your own pocket and didn’t know it you might still live as a pauper.

That is how most of us go through life. Because we put the blame for the good and the bad outside of ourselves we never get to discover how truly remarkable and beyond capable we are to make a change for ourselves. We are the creators and the transformer of our lives but we don’t know it so we live from what others have dictated. We live up to or below the expectations of others without realizing that it is ourselves who need to set the path and make good things happen.

We live as victims and survivors. A survivor is someone who made it through a tremendously difficult time period whatever that may have been. OKAY it is past now you have survived move on. I hate to be harsh or sound cruel but to call yourself a survivor is like moving to a new home but carrying around all your belongs on your back all your days. Imagine the weight that would be if you bagged up all your furniture and everything and had to take it with you where ever you go. Stop it. You survived that means you made it through it.

NOW live as a victor because you made it through it. Adopt a new powerful mind set and recognize your incredible strength and tenacity for having prevailed. Instead of keeping surviving alive become alive with an incredible rise in energy to make your present and future incredible!

Leaners need to take charge of their learning and remaining open may be a difficult experience. Someone said ‘ we don’t listen to listen we listen to comment’ and that is frequently what those do while learning. Either they comment on how the information is something they already know or that they don’t know, or that it is just like someone else’s information, or that it is not relevant or applicable, or that it is too difficult or too easy and on and on and on and on. The mind does whatever it does unless you take charge of it.

success is the sum of small efforts repeated day in and day out

Recognizing when you shut down, close off, IS an important moment to recognize. When you shut down is when you limit or prevent the flow of new information which may be critical. It could occur in a classroom, reading a blog or a book, arguing with someone important to you, or outside in an urban war zone. If you shut down and freeze the flow of what you may need in a critical moment, you leave yourself open to many possible pitfalls. The worst of which is when your safety depends on it, otherwise, you can pull your head from the rectal canal an apologize to the person you fought with, and you can go back and re-read the material. There are times when things matter more than other times but the skill required in each case is the same skill.

Learning to remain open is an important talent an ability we all can do much better learning to acquire.

Life presents opportunities each instant. We are either open or not open. Easy enough. We can bring our awareness to those moments and endeavor to remain open. Yes, we will close down, but the repeated act of trying to remain open is the beginning of new positive habit formation. You will be consciously competent for a while. The very same thing applies to living as a victor and taking charge of your life. Yes, for awhile the process will seem cumbersome. So did riding a bike for a while.

Anything we learned took some time and effort. Swimming, cooking, knitting, playing a sport, a game, fixing a car, computer, doing math, reading, writing, walking and feeding oneself. Everything is acquired through a process and we can either understand and embrace the process and make it easier on ourselves or we can resist it. Choice is ours.

Some people have little experience in making deliberate choices for themselves and they defer mostly to others. This is another area people may want to gain some experience utilizing awareness. When do you give your choice or your power away?

i choose success...

Through all of our learning the nicer we can be, the less we blame others or try to take from others, the further along we get. Learning how to co-operate and be a team player, learning how to empathize and to add value to others are are very good abilities to work on. Unlike, some greedy, horrible, uber rich people who care for no one but only seek to amass more, we ought to strive to find peace and happiness and well being for all. I believe that the more power you have the more responsibility you have The more power you have the more other people are in your care. The more good you can and should do.

Look, it rains on the good and the bad the poor and the rich. Good people suffer while bad people prosper and vice versa. The reason many powerful people, who are not very good people, continue to be unlikable and uncaring people, aside from that may be how they were when they began, is that they have a massed a fortune. They most likely did so utilizing the very principles I have been sharing all along because the principles work and are no respecter of persons. That means anyone can use them for success. (yes, some were born to it etc).

Some have great success and yet they are not likable or caring people. Once they got their wealth and power they changed, not for the better, but changed because now that they had everything they decided they needed to keep it. They cling to it. IT is more important that any person. They feared they will lose IT or others will take it away so they try to prevent others from succeeding so they can’t take away some piece of their pie. If they can remain further ahead and farther away it is unlikely anyone can take it from them. SO they oppress others to try to remain safe.

I think that is a sad way to live and many of them are unhappy, fearful, and unhealthy. Since we can’t take it with us we ought to enjoy it while we have it. Many don’t actually enjoy it they just need to have it and it has cost them dearly too. Their thoughts destroy them.

Thinking makes it so. We become what we think about.

An important point to note. The successful wealthy people, good or bad, generous or selfish, self made or born to it, those who have had wealth a long while, most all of them feel and believe that they are entitled to it and that they deserve it. This is important. Many of the rest of us don’t. That is a crucial difference in mind set and attitude. They are entitled. They deserve it.

Some of the rest of us waste time whining, complaining, criticizing the wealthy stating they were lucky, or born with a silver spoon. We may be resentful or envious non of this helps us. That is putting the focus outside of us on others or circumstances. What we think about is what we get. If we waste time on others wishing bad befalls them or being resentful we are not spending time making our life better. We need to focus on creating what we want!

It is important to note that WHEN you feel entitled to it and YOU FEEL you deserve it that you will be successful in acquiring it much more so than if you do not have this attitude.

Attitude is everything! What sets most people apart – the successful from those who are not yet successful – is mind set. It is the attitude. If you have the attitude that you are destined to win you are much more likely to as long as you spend the time preparing to win. It is not magical thinking. It is not about wishing something into existence. The rich feel that money comes to them or that they deserve and because they feel this way and absolutely believe it they are able to organize their thoughts and efforts around getting it much more easily. It is MIND over matter.

you can if you think you can

Mind over matter is the concept but not as most people consider it. They think magic, telepathy, telekinesis.

It is the mind, the thoughts, that precede actions, which are all targeted toward acquiring wealth (the matter) just as a laser beam is targeted. Their mind and actions their being is aligned and congruent in pursuit of what is most important to them. They deserve it so they know they will have! They deserve it so they know that they can get it. They are entitled to it so they can get more of it. WHY? BECAUSE that is just the kind of person they are! ONE who is entitled to have and to spend money. THIS IS a powerful mindset let us not make any mistake about that. This type of mind set positively and constructively managed and aimed could serve anyone of us well. Attitude makes all the difference.

The fact of the matter is you and I and they all deserve it. There is plenty. We are all legally entitled to it. If you don’t feel worthy or that you can have it then that is something to become aware of and change if you wish. By the way I do not equate having lots of money with being a success or happy or good. However, our society seems to think that money is a measure of success. I don’t but I do utilize the concept.

I think one can be happy and successful without money as well as one can be with money. I also think one can have untold wealth and be a failure as a human being, as a parent as someone’s child, or anything else. Attitude is everything! We can have a powerful mindset without having to be greedy or selfish. We can have everything we want and allow others to do the same or even help them get theirs too.

BUT the winner mindset is key. It is committed, it believes, it feels entitled, it is passionate, it has burning desire, it won’t quit or be defeated or ever give up, it is consistent, persistent yet adaptable and flexible. It stays the course and does whatever is necessary (legally and ethically) to get to the destination. IF one is extra wise one makes sure they enjoy the journey along the way. If you know the wonderful destination point you are going to ultimately end up you may as well have a great time getting there!

The important thing is wealth and success comes in the form of love, family, friendship, relationships, happiness, joy, peace, health and well being, fun, activities doing what you want, when and with whom. Freedom to enjoy and pursue whatever you wish. Money may be a part of success but certainly only a limited part. Money is not evil and anyone can want any amount they wish. People may be evil or corrupted or kind and generous. So I think it is important to be the kind of person who is a kind and generous success. After all we all live together on this planet.

doubt your limitations

Before, I leave you this day, know that repetition builds skill. The right kind of repetition done correctly builds skill.

Revisiting and returning to materials you have read, listened to, watched or participated in is valuable because it gives you more chances to open up and take it in. You understand it differently at different times. So go back and read again and again. You will make new connections and have new insights and awareness.

Keep the pursuit alive in you. Learn to open up to those things that benefit you. Learn to remain open with others and make it a point to live as a victor. BUT be a nice victor. Strive to be the kind of person who leaves people better off than when you found them.

There is plenty in this world to enjoy and to be grateful for. Enjoy it all, you deserve it.

The hoarders can’t get it all so be of good cheer and focus on the positive future we can create not on present difficulties.

Keep the faith, know that you deserve all good things and inside you is more incredible talent or ability than you may yet be aware of. You have much more than million dollars hidden in your pocket but you need to go find it. So go look for it and discover it! ‘Seek and ye shall find’.

You have learned so many things useful and useless. You do realize that, don’t you.

design your life

So put your ability to learn to work for you. You are already a remarkable learner now just aim it in a very useful direction.

Inside you you are truly wealthy. You have so much more going on for you than you have ever realized. You current and perpetual thinking may be have kept you blind to who you actually are, what you are truly capable of and all the talents, resources and abilities within you. You have all this wealth inside but have given yourself none of the credit. You need to visit your inner bank and discover what is there. You have much more than a million dollars inside you.

You can make your dreams come true. You can make more money, you can be rich inside and outside! You can have the future you want and the life you want and be the person you always wanted to become. You are already rich within and you are a learner so learn to do what you want in order to have what you want.

Learn to discover your hidden talents, abilities and resources that are inside you ready to be awakened. Learn to manage your thoughts, control your thoughts and determine your future. Learn to finally get the kind of results you have always wanted and longed for. Learn that you are already creator and begin to create what you want rather than what you don;t want.  You are a magnet so draw to yourself what you want rather than what you don’t want. Start getting the results you have always wanted because ONLY YOU can make it so.

You are a victor when you apply certain principles and laws in certain ways you transform and get what you want more easily. SO start living as a victor. Live with courage, confidence, faith, and power. Make your life what you want it to be.

Come back again and again. Revisit your learning and you will go further than you can presently imagine. Hold in your mind good, positive thoughts and you will transform your experience. Keep going and never quit and you will be so amazed at the journey you create for yourself. It will more than WOW you. And then share all good things with others too.

Let’s make each of our own lives incredible and together create a garden paradise, I mean why not. Let’s make this world wonderful!

Oooops who closed down right there?

If you don’t think we can certainly we never will. ‘Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you are right’.

You see, it really does begin with our thoughts. It begins with YOUR thoughts. Each of us responsible for what we do between our ears. What we do between our ears is create our outer circumstances. SO decide to make both the very best.” Rex Sikes

The Secret To Getting The Results You Want! Transform Your Life!

repetition

“Go back and read through these blogs again and again. Then come back again at a later time too.

Repetition is the mother of skill.

Come back again at a later time too.

Each time you re-read you can and will discover things you missed when you read it for the first time.

What you missed was there all along.

It is YOU who have changed.

The person who goes back to read again has already been altered by life along the way. New experiences have been added.

You are not exactly the same person you were yesterday, a week ago, a month or years past. It may not seem as though there is much difference from day to day but we do change.

You are changing now. So update what you are learning by going back and reviewing again.

we are what we repeatedly do Aristotle

When you re-read something, at another time, you bring a new awareness to. You discover new ideas for yourself or put together thoughts in a different way. Your thinking opens up to new possibilities while other concepts may take root or gel for you when you revisit the material.

You will become aware of more, understand more, learn more and be able to use more when you re-visit the material again and again over time.

It is a worthwhile practice to read and read and read over again the same inspirational material. It is a wonderful habit to form. The beginning of wisdom is experience revisited.

Skill acquisition is enhanced by repetition and the correct application of what you are learning. Implement what you learn, use it to change your life for the better.

As you read and review you better understand the process, the fine points and you can adjust and enhance your efforts as a result of the added information from new insights. When you do these things you hone your abilities and make them work for you.

So come back often.” Rex Sikes

How To Learn Anything Well, More Quickly And Easily – short video

ability motiviation attitude

“Learning is what we are designed to do. We are made to learn and to evolve. Some of us learned some bad habits which we can overcome, but we have learned so many, many things. It is important to begin to realize this and take inventory of what and how we learn. When we do we can discover that though we learned to be limited in ways we can overcome those limitations by learning how. We use the same process, our learning ability.

Some of us learned that learning was tough or hard. Even though you learned that don’t you find that thought odd? Yes, some did make it tough for us to learn in school because school isn’t actually about learning – it is about quotas, and standards and a politicized process. It is about memorizing, recalling and following rules. I’m not saying there weren’t excellent teachers because there are some, even many., but they are frequently hampered by the institution.

Learning is whatever and however you make it to be. It is simply a process. It is rewarding and can fun, simple and easy when you know how.
